SARA NEJAD

design, Strategy, innovation

I develop future-forward strategies merging design, technology, and systems thinking to drive circular and regenerative economies. My work spans biotech, food, and fashion, blending science with market innovation for lasting impact.

selected work

Emerald

Personal bioreactor with an automated system to grow and harvest spirulina algae that anyone can use at home.

circular economies with material Provenance

A DNA-based data encoding system to track substance flows worldwide, the Material Provenance Project organization helps to support sustainable practices by providing insight into the provenance, properties, and journeys of materials.

Wearable olfactory interface

Planning a dinner party in space? Aromata is a personal wearable olfactory interface with a modular system that leverages synthetic biology to enhance the food experience for astronauts, by safely and conveniently producing aroma compounds on demand.

Microbial Memories

Microbiome as cultural archive—based on the emerging science linking microbiomes to terroir in wine and food, anyone can use environmental metagenomics to capture the complexities of a time and place to create the potential for novel experiences of flavor.

Biodesign in space

What does farming in space look like? This project explores a symbiome designed to create a closed loop bio-regenerative system that promotes harmonious cohabitation among humans, fungi, and microorganism.
